Inverness, Florida-- Purple Heart Mural Memorial will be on display in conjunction with this year’s Flag Day Ceremony.

According to the City of Inverness, the Purple Heart Mural Memorial will be displayed in the IGC Lobby, from Tuesday, June 12 - Friday, June 15.

The memorial includes pictures of everyone in the State of Florida from 2011 who lost their lives while serving their country.

Outdoor travel writers to explore Nature Coast

 

The Citrus, Hernando and Pasco County Offices of Tourism Development are promoting the Nature Coast the old fashioned way, by word-of-mouth.

A week-long trip from May 19-26, called the “Nature Coast” FAM Tour, is designed for outdoor/travel writers to experience some of Florida’s best attractions.

The six journalists, who have been published in many notable publications including Alaska Airlines, Southern Living, and Gonomad.com among others, will travel from as far away as California, Oregon and Massachusetts. 

Homosassa mother critically injured by airboat propeller

Withlacoochee River, Florida -- A Homosassa mother was seriously injured in airboat accident Sunday with her two children nearby.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), investigators say 30-year-old Nicole Aspinwall received life-threatening injuries in the accident.

They say Aspinwall, her 15-year-old son, 9-year old daughter and a friend 37-year-old Robert Miller were parked on the dry riverbed at the Rutland flats off the Withlacoochee River. The airboat wasn't running.

FWC Snook researcher won conservation award

Crystal River, Florida-- The Wildlife Foundation of Florida honored longtime Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologist Ron Taylor with the 2011 Louise Ireland Humphrey Achievement Award at the FWC Commission meeting Thursday, May 3, in Crystal River.

According to the Wildlife Foundation of Florida, Taylor has studied marine fisheries for the state for 35 years, and he is the lead scientist for Snook research in Florida,  noted worldwide as an authority on the sport fish.

Tampa, Florida --  The U.S. Postal Service and its letter carriers ask Tampa residents to join them and the rest of the nation in combating one of the U.S' growing problems, hunger, by leaving food at your mailboxes on Saturday, May 12. 

According to USPS, this one-day food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive across America — including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

Lecanto, Florida -- Selecting plants for your backyard is pretty easy, as long as you know a few simple rules. 

You can learn how to choose beautiful, low maintenance plants for your yard during a free class. 

It's being held in the Citrus County UF/IFAS Extension classroom, 3650 W. Sovereign Path in Lecanto on Tuesday, May 22.

It starts at 3 p.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m.  The class is free but space is limited.
