CITRUS COUNTY, Florida - The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is looking into a rise in newspaper thefts over the past several months.
Authorities believe the couponing craze is to blame for people stealing multiple newspapers from vending racks, but only paying for one.
It's hurting the carriers who have to pay for the newspapers themselves in order to turn around and sell them. One woman who contracts out with the Citrus Chronicle says she has lost anywhere from $200 to $400 a week.
According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, the thefts are happening in Citrus Springs and Beverly Hills. Authorities say they have been using detectives and patrol deputies to keep an eye on specific areas on Sundays.
Officials with Citrus Publishing say while there is usually some level of theft in the newspaper business, this is extreme. Circulation director, Kathie Stewart, says they've already lost one vendor recently because of it.
